Join us for a hands-on, heart-centered workshop celebrating Día de Muertos through art, poetry, and cultural remembrance. Led by Mexican American author and artist Nancy Viera, this workshop invites participants to honor their loved ones by creating items for a personal ofrenda (altar) and by writing a Calaverita Poem in tribute to your chosen person. Participants may choose to focus on one, a few or all of the art activities below to enhance your alter.
· Design a Saint Candle – Customize a devotional candle with images, colors, and messages that reflect someone you wish to honor.
· Make a Flower Wreath – Craft a vibrant wreath with paper flowers, symbolizing the cycles of life, memory, and rebirth.
· Design a Calavera (skull) – Calaveras embody the cultural significance of honoring the deceased and the cycle of life and death.
· Create a decorated background – Use colored paper, markers, color pencils or acrylic paint to design and color a background for your ofrenda.
· Write a Calaverita Poem – Learn the tradition of humorous, heartfelt “calaveritas” (skull poems) and write your own playful tribute to someone living or passed.

From Jeanne, BAA President:
I started working on my background board as a sample to inspire others and thought I’d share. My mother loved sitting in her chair sipping tea and reading or crocheting. She joined a dance troupe when in her 60s – this is one of the photos of her in tap dance shoes, posing in an outfit she sewed. She gardened, growing tomatoes and flowers (and I realize my plant looks nothing like a tomato plant! On my list of things to fix!). She loved playing scrabble so I bought a used Scrabble game at a thrift store to create her name with letters.
