My approach to painting is based in change.
I start with a place, an experience, a color, an emotion. Sometimes the inspiration comes from a photograph, sometimes what I see in front of me, sometimes just what’s in my head right then, something internal.
I first use gesture to capture some essence of that starting point. Then color. Then perhaps some drawing, more color, more layers. Recently I’ve been adding collage, using handmade papers I’ve inherited as well as those I’ve made myself. I keep in mind my starting point, but sometimes the process leads me to another place entirely.
At some point I stand back and ask, what is the point of this painting?
Then, more layers. And repeat. Until instinctively I find it done.
